SLIS

Latin American Symposium on Computing and Society

SLIS is an event that aims at studying, using an interdisciplinary approach, how information and communication technologies (e.g. computer science and digital technologies) and our Latin American societies relate (how they articulate and co-construct themselves). The event is part of XLIV CLEI. Original contributions are sought in the field of social studies of information and communication technologies and their relationship to the construction of our societies (including, but not limited to, historical, sociological, economic, juridical and political studies).

Topics of Interest

The contributions can be aligned in some of the listed topics. However, this list is not exhaustive nor exclusive, other related topics can be considered.

  • Information and knowledge society or cognitive and informational capitalism: knowledge and innovation economies. The digital age and the characteristics of the current stage of the capitalism: social classes, exploitation, property and production of the value. The current scope of the classic concepts of the human and social sciences. e-Science, e-Health, e-Justice, e-Tourism, e-Education, etc. Electronic Government and e-Democracy.
  • Public policies, regulations and Internet governance: Legal-political and institutional aspects of the Internet governance. Freedom of expression and the right to communication. The human right to privacy in the digital age. Protection of personal data and information in general. Tensions over the neutrality and non-neutrality of networks (isonomy). Regulation of telecommunications. Electronic government and the challenges of the open government (management of works, information, and data).
  • Intellectual property, collaborative production, and copyleft: The expansion of intellectual rights. Features and limitations of copyright laws. Collaborative production and open paradigms. Free software and open software. Content management under open and free licenses (e.g., Creative Commons, GPL). Open hardware. Open science. Open innovation (fab labs, hacker spaces, business models). Public domain and the state public scope. Appropriations of free software, content, and data for profit. The legal protection of common intellectual assets. Legal, Ethical, and Social aspects of Information Technologies.
  • Cultural and digital technologies: Transformations in the processes of production, circulation, and consumption of cultural goods in the different social sectors. Music, movies, TV, literature. Online cultural patterns: cybercultures, hacker culture, virtual communities. Transformations in individual and collective identities, youth cultures. Studies on "social network" sites. Asymmetries related to the copy capabilities: how and who are allowed or forbidden to copy.
  • Educational and digital technologies: Virtual education, virtual learning environments, collaborative learning, mutations in the roles of teaching actors. Digital inclusion and education: the Connect Equality program and other "1 to 1" plans in Latin America. Characterizations of software, hardware, and infrastructure. Changes in organizational dimensions. Public policies and regulations of educational institutions. The emergence of new roles in education: contenders, referent technical schools, etc.
  • Work and digital technologies: Teleworking, immaterial work, informational work, digital work. Traits of work processes mediated by digital technologies, case studies; relocation, outsourcing and de-working. Internet-mediated work: volunteering or unpaid work? New business models. The SSI sector: recent performance and trends: employment, exportations, importations, salaries, working conditions, syndicates, gender, etc.
  • Control, surveillance, and big data: leaks, espionage, and massive surveillance: Assange, Manning, Snowden. Tensions over the Internet of Things. Social studies on the management of big data (security cameras, medical data, services in the cloud, etc.). To whom belong the data?: ownership of the data and "fingerprint". Modulations of subjectivity in the digital age.
  • Emerging topics: The growth of cryptocurrencies (e.g., BitCoin). Construction of artificial intelligence: will they be public, private, or common? Rethinking human rights in the digital era. Regulations in the development and use of drones, robots, and intelligent machines. Social studies of computer science applied to agricultural and industrial processes. Social tensions on computer science applied to health.
