Brief chronological review
In 1972, a panel discussion on topics in Informatics was held in Valparaiso/Chile, organized by the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaiso, where the need for regional events was analyzed.
In 1973, the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso convenes all the national universities of Chile for a new Panel Discussion on Computer Topics.
In 1974, the first Latin American meeting was organized, with the participation of more than 100 academics from various countries in the region, such as Argentina, Peru and Chile, under the name of PANEL 74.
From 1975 onwards, annual Latin American meetings were held in Valparaiso/Chile under the name of Panel, generally accompanied by an exhibition of equipment, known as Expodata, from this period dates back to the Latin American Panel-Expodata.
In 1979, organized in Caracas/Venezuela, the VII Conference of Informatics Panel-Expodata, with Professor Carlos José Pereida de Lucena (Brazil) as Chairman of the Program Committee. The Centro Latinoamericano de Estudios en Informática – CLEI is born, with Professor Victor Yockteng from Colombia as president and Professor Aldo Migliaro Osorio from Chile as Executive Secretary.
That same year, 1979, CLEI is recognized in IFIP as a Latin American representative at the initiative of the hindu researcher Professor Narshiman.
In 1980, the Latin American event held in Caracas/Venezuela was called the Latin American Computer Conference for the first time.
The 1981 and 1982 Latin American conferences were held in Argentina and Peru, respectively. Since then, the Latin American Computer Conference has been held annually on an itinerant basis.
In 1984, it was decided that UCV would carry out this event through its Computer Science Center, now transformed into the UCV School of Informatics Engineering, in the city of Viña del Mar/Chile.
The following conferences are held annually to this day, year by year, in which CLEI directors are renewed on a biannual basis.
